Artist Statement

Breaking Free
Life is alchemical.  Made up of stardust, we become creators, transforming our lives into meaning, beauty and connection to the world around us and the spirit within us.  Art is part of that magical process, mixing raw color and light, lines and patterns, shapes and voids into new realities that live in the world and touch those who see them. Being part of this birthing process brings me joy, often surprising and delighting me.

My art begins with images captured with my always-with-me camera, taking pictures of everyday beauty ... pebbles on a beach, a garden gate, a bright arrangement of bottles, a man playing a harmonica on a cool evening.  These images call me to play; some wave their hands, shouting "Choose me! Choose me!" In the endless sandbox of possibilities known as Photoshop, these clammering images are then layered together, manipulated, cut apart, remixed, blended and transformed into something completely new and unexpected, something that is me, yet not me, some mysterious gift of spirit we call art.

Circus Flyers
Some people call this process "convergent media" as it brings together Photography (and other ways of capturing images), Photoshop (as well as other softwares), and Painting (digital or actual) and then prints the image onto a variety of surfaces (paper, canvas, metal, wood, fabric and so on).  Sometimes digital art seems like the new kid on the block ... an often boisterous, rowdy and untamed kid, breaking the rules, stepping on toes and ruffling feathers.  However, the history of art is filled with moments of evolution, and even revolution, in style and technology.  This is one of those moments.

I am excited and delighted to be part of this new movement that is expanding the concept of art and inviting ever more people to play and opening up more possibilities for making and enjoying beauty.

  3. Hi Joyce ... I was guided here today and am delighted I came! What a joy to see the art you are creating. It is very inspiring to me ... would love to create in this way some day. I'm smiling thinking of the Inspiration Network and helping with the newsletter. A long time since I thought of that! :-)

I shared your book link with a friend who just lost her husband last April. ~Sor'a Garrett

  4. Hi Sora ... how lovely to hear from you and be reminded of the fun times of the past. What a long way we've come since those early days of IN. I'm sure you are creating and inspiring every day in your incredibly generous ways.

Give your friend my best ... it's difficult territory and very hard to realize that potential gifts come with the loss.
